The United Way of Southeast Missouri released "Destination Kindergarten," a book to help parents prepare children for success in kindergarten, according to a release sent Thursday. The 55-page illustrated book is FREE to area students entering kindergarten and consists of activities, skills, suggested resources, introduction to the alphabet and more. The book is available at kindergarten screenings at area schools and at preschools. The book was a collaboration with the Cape Girardeau Public Library and local artist Tony Schuch. Did You Know?

  • Children’s academic successes at ages 9 and 10 can be attributed to the amount of talk they hear from birth through age 3.
  • Children are born ready to learn.  They cultivate 85 percent of their intellect, personality and skills by age five.
  • Research tells us educational outcomes in the teenage years are related to academic skills at kindergarten.  Academic skills at kindergarten, in turn, are related to early experiences that foster the development of capabilities during the earliest years.  There is, furthermore, a strong association between children’s cognitive skills before they enter kindergarten with achievement in elementary and high school.  High school completion can even be predicted based on general cognitive ability in the preschool years.  (From Neurons to Neighborhoods. Shonkoff and Phillips, eds.)
  • The quality of an infant’s relationship with his or her primary caregivers has a decisive impact on the architecture of the brain, affecting the nature and extent of adult capabilities.
