Area Scouts Gear Up for Summer Camps

United Way of Southeast Missouri partners with a variety of educational programs throughout the summer months. You can read about some of our summer programing here! And the summer fun does not stop with those agencies! This month we are giving a special focus on another educational, youth-focused partnership that’s vital to our community – Scouting. The United Way Investment Committee specifically asked that our funding help support boys and girls whose families might not be able to afford Scouting. We are proud to help open the world of Scouting to all area youth.

In the Shawnee District, The Boy Scouts have over 150 boys from local troops planning to attend summer camp this year. Their Summer Day Camp begins July 31 at Cape County Park North. All youth first grade and up are invited to attend the weeklong camp. Drop off begins at 7:30 and the camp ends at 4 daily. Participants will enjoy a variety of fun activities including archery, hiking, fishing and more!

The Girl Scouts also offer summer opportunities that are as unique as the girls they serve. This summer, girls will challenge themselves at Zombie Survival Camp, an outdoor-survival program; or learn about the world of horses, and even painting them, at any one of the 3 equestrian programs at Girl Scout’s resident camp, Cherokee Ridge. Additionally, girls have the opportunity to engage at a Southeast S.T.E.M. camp at Southeast Missouri State University! At Southeast S.T.E.M. camp, girls will explore topics in biology, geology, chemistry, robotics and CSI all while staying on the campus. If summer camp wasn’t enough for these scouts, the girls will also spend some time cleaning up parks and walking trails, participating in Scoutfest with the Shawnee District, singing The National Anthem at the Ballpark and so much more!

The new school year will be here before we know it, so check your school’s calendars in August to see when the next Scout recruitment will be at your school to join the fun of Scouting!

United Way of Southeast Missouri is proud to partner with organizations dedicated to ensuring area students are able to enjoy their summer while still being provided with basic needs and educational tools to keep them on track and ready for the next school year.
